What is the 3G shutdown?

Appalachian Wireless and other carriers across the nation have shutting down their 3G networks in order to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. Although Appalachian Wireless did not fully shut down its 3G network until March 2023, parts of the network retired sooner, which did impact customer experience and service.

Some of our roaming partners had already begun shutting down their 3G networks, which may be impacting your wireless experience when you are traveling. Due to these changes, 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) will be unable to make or receive calls (including calls to 911), send or receive text messages, or use data services.
